Unless you live in a studio apartment, your home has at least one bedroom: a sanctuary of sorts, where you escape to for some privacy, and also to sleep.

Join Thabo Ntatlo and Dimakatso for our latest SASL lesson, where they introduce some basic vocabulary associated with bedrooms, and revisit some vocabulary introduced in last week’s lesson.

SA Deaf Rugby International

Deaf Rugby

This week is Deaf Awareness Week, Heritage Day (also known as National Braai Day), and it is also the first full week of the Rugby World Cup (we won’t talk about Saturday’s game against Japan!). So it is especially fitting that this week’s episode of DTV features coverage of South Africa Deaf Rugby’s international game against Wales Deaf Rugby.

This is not only an opportunity to relive this historical moment, but also to meet some of the people who made it all possible.

South African Sign Language Lessons – Living Room

The living room, or lounge, is where we traditionally do most of our relaxing and socialising at home. It is the room where we entertain guests, or sit quietly reading a book. In many homes it is the room where the family gathers to watch TV together, or play games, and it is the room covered in this week’s SASL lesson.

Join Thabo Ntatlo and Katlego as they introduce you to the vocabulary of the living room.

Balalaika Hotel

Balalaika Hotel

Earlier this year Thabo Ntatlo met with Deaf trainees at the Balalaika Hotel in Sandton, Johannesburg. Nancy Gaylard is the hotel’s Training Manager, and one of the programmes she oversees is the training and development of the Deaf in various aspects of hotel administration.

The success of the programme stems from the fact that it is not a short-term intervention. Tune in to this week’s episode to learn more.

South African Sign Language Lessons

While some of us have a tendency of falling asleep in front of the TV, most people associate the bedroom with sleep. In this week’s SASL lesson, Thabo Ntatlo and Dimakatso go over vocabulary associated with the bedroom.

Household Tips

Eager to find out what clever household cleaning tips Njeleti has for you this week? So are we.

Cleaning a Chopping Block/Board

Directions

For general cleaning, rub a slice of lemon across the board. This will disinfect the board, and remove light stains. For tougher stains, squeeze lemon juice directly onto the stains and allow to stand for 10-minutes. Wipe clean, and rinse.

Household Tips

Can we get any love for carpet stains?

Probably not; they’re a nightmare to clean without the proper solution, but luckily Njeleti has one that is tough on stains, but not you, your wallet, or the environment.

Homemade Carpet Stain Remover

Directions

Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a clean spray bottle. Spray the mixture directly onto the stain and wait for 10-minutes. Clean the treated stain using a brush or sponge, and warm soapy water.

Ikageng Initiative

There is something inherently more precious about items that are handmade with love, and DTV recently spent time with the women behind Ikageng (Building Ouselves). Five previously unemployed women have, over the past 13-years, created unique felt toys and narrative panels, with some of their embroidered artworks even exhibited at a show at ABSA.
