In this week’s South African Sign Language lesson, Karabo talks to a young woman whose boyfriend suffers from bad breath.
The Department of Social Development, in partnership with Vodacom, launched the new Gender-Based Violence Command Centre in December 2016. Candice Morgan attended the launch, and spoke with several stakeholders regarding the Centre.
New technology, and the use of special social auxiliary workers, mean the Centre is fully accessible to the Deaf. Women who are being abused, or are dealing with any form of violence, can call or SMS the Centre, or use Skype to contact a social worker directly, without the need for an interpreter.
The Centre can be contacted via 0800 428 428, or by dialing *120*7867# on your cellphone.

While in the Western Cape, Candice Morgan had a chance to meet with Jared Drake, an IT Specialist. Jared currently works as a support technician, helping to maintain network servers. Jared talks about his childhood and family life, before taking Candice out for a jog. Working in IT can see you sitting a lot, so Jared started jogging to maintain an active lifestyle, in addition to eating healthy meals.
Although Jared loves what he does, he doesn’t plan on being a support technician all his life, with his next goal being to move into system architecture, or software development.

The City of Joburg recently hosted a workshop on healthy eating, and Candice Morgan was there to meet with Sandra Pretorius. Sandra is a dietician, and she presented the workshop. Sandra spoke to Candice about obesity, and why following a healthy eating plan is important, and what the components of a healthy eating plan are.
Healthy eating is not only important for preventing obesity, but also for preventing many health related problems, but with our busy lifestyles it is easy to fall into a habit of eating prepared meals, without considering how healthy they are.

For those who don’t know what a Social Auxiliary Worker is, Charlene helpfully explains, before explaining why she felt drawn to the profession. But every person is more than just their profession, so Charlene invites Candice and the DTV team into her home, allowing us to see the other side of who she is as a person.

From the Western Cape, Candice next travels to Parys, to visit The Dell Cheetah Centre, an organisation focused on saving cheetahs from extinction. Founder, Estelle Kemp, discusses the history of the centre, the reasons for establishing it, and the centre’s successes.
The centre is also home to other wildlife that have been rescued and need rehabilitation, or care.
